Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a mainstream technology and the growing, global importance of it is top of mind to executives. In a recent study, Deloitte surveyed 1,900 executives from companies worldwide and found that 63% say AI technologies are very or critically important to their business success today and 76% believe AI empowers people to make better decisions.¹ Despite the wide adoption and deployment of AI and machine learning (ML), a data-driven subset of AI, the tools for explaining, debugging, and monitoring AI/ML have not matured at the same pace. The limited progress in these areas impedes, or in some cases precludes, the adoption of AI/ML by enterprises that manage sensitive data such as credit approvals, fraud detection, insurance claims, and health diagnostics.

AI Quality Management, which addresses not only the famous “Black Box” problem of AI with explainability tools but also includes performance management and fairness analytics, is crucial in helping enterprises cross the chasm to adopt AI. Heightened regulatory scrutiny and general public distrust towards AI/ML further compound the urgency for higher AI quality. To wit, 43% of executives surveyed in Deloitte’s study say they have major or extreme concerns about potential ethical risks associated with their AI initiatives. Many of HPE’s customers who are deploying and scaling their ML models share this sentiment. Meanwhile, governments worldwide, particularly those in Europe and the U.S., are moving quickly to legislate regulations around AI/ML and, as a result, are accelerating the urgency for explainability and monitoring solutions.

TruEra was founded in 2019 by Will Uppington, Anupam Datta, and Shayak Sen to provide AI Quality Management solutions that help data scientists and ML engineers explain, debug, and monitor models. Collectively, the founders are uniquely positioned to deliver market-leading solutions in this space. Will (CEO) brings decades of experience as an operator; prior to TruEra, he held a variety of executive roles including Chief Product Officer at Bloomreach, a VC-backed startup that he helped grow for 10 years and where he was the first non-engineering hire. Anupam (President & Chief Scientist) was a Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) for over a decade and led research in AI explainability and governance. Shayak (CTO) completed his PhD at CMU and introduced several breakthroughs to the field of explainable AI.

Backed by six years of pioneering research at CMU and continuous improvement since, TruEra’s AI Quality solutions provide performance analytics for accuracy, reliability, stability, and bias/fairness, among other critical metrics, and offer explanations that reveal how models arrive at their results. Such analytics empower data scientists and developers with granular insights into model behaviors, greatly reduce their time spent debugging, and inform “humans-in-the-loop” as to how to better tune their ML models. Unlike its competitors, which largely repackage open-source solutions, TruEra offers a suite of solutions that are differentiated by their ability to provide: explainability that is an order of magnitude more accurate, a broad set of model analytics, the ability to work across model types, and ease of deployment and use. Through its platform, TruEra substantially improves the quality of ML models, while improving transparency and reporting for managers and stakeholders.

We are excited to partner with the TruEra team as they continue to deliver solutions critical to all teams developing and deploying ML-driven applications. As mentioned in the recent VentureBeat article, HPE customers are rapidly adopting AI initiatives and TruEra stands out for its deep expertise, differentiated technology, and practical experience to help companies deliver and monitor AI applications.² Our partnership also provides the opportunity for TruEra and HPE to collaborate on innovative solutions that accelerate the adoption of TruEra’s technology across a diverse and global set of enterprises. At a time when enterprises demand both performance and transparency for AI-driven recommendations, HPE believes TruEra will answer the call and is proud to support them in their mission.
